Tchao Queridos Irmãos de São Sebastião!

Goodbye Dear Friends of Saint Sebastian!

The time had come to say goodbye and we knew that a surprise party was in the works.

On the way to Manoel & Menice's for "lasagna" we were practicing how we were going to react when everyone was there and screaming, "Surprise!"...

Sure enough, we walked in and everyone was there (including some of the unbelieving husbands!) shouting, "Surprise!"  But we didn't have to react.  Menice told us to stand there and not say anything.  She then queued up kingdom melody #85 and everyone revealed a song book they had hidden behind their back.

They sang us the first verse of this song and we stood there speechless and surprised after all...
in a puddle of tears.

Goodbye street..
Goodbye empty house..

We'll never forget this amazing experience.

Thank you to all of you who took time out of your busy schedules to check in on us these past six months.  Your kind words and support meant the world to us.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Under a Jaca Tree

One year ago Manoel & Menice moved to São Sebastião and started working hard in the surrounding villages.  The first week they worked in a village called “Terra Nova” = new earth.  There they met a woman named Sonia who accepted a study and they’ve returned each week since then to conduct her study.  Sonia’s parents live next door and her father started to study soon after.  In time, Sonia’s mother would listen in and although she wouldn’t accept a study, she had new questions each week.   Sonia and her parents started telling their neighbors about the things they were learning and recently, several neighbors have started stopping by during their studies with all kinds of questions!

Because of all the interest in this village, Manoel and Ben decided to hold a mini-meeting there.  They reasoned that this would whet the appetites of all interested to attend the meetings in São Sebastião.  A date and time was set and Sonia agreed to hold it in her backyard.

Manoel, Menice and a mother/son duo from our congregation arrived early in Terra Nova that day.  They went door to door personally inviting everyone in the village to a “special discourse” that afternoon at Sonia’s house.  They met one man who informed them that he has been disfellowshipped since 1985!  They encouraged him to come, and wouldn’t you know, he was the first one who showed up.

In total, 18 people from the village were in attendance!  With the six of us, there were 24 people total.  It was a beautiful afternoon and one of the most special things we’ve ever been part of.

The talk was split in two parts.  Manoel (left) spoke for the first 15 minutes and Ben (right) for the last 15.  They chose the outline:  “Who is qualified to govern mankind?”  When they’d make a point about how man is failing in certain areas like healthcare for example, certain ones in the audience would shout, “THAT’S TRUE!”  Then at the end when Ben was leading them to the conclusion that there was only one ruler who could fix everything, they shouted in unison, “JESUS!”  haha

After the talk, Manoel asked for any who wanted the recent magazines to raise their hand.  He also encouraged them to speak to the witnesses who were there if they were interested in a personal bible study.

Four new studies were started and the disfellowshipped brother spoke to Manoel and Ben after about how he could get started back in the truth!  That night, Sonia and her husband (who up to that point had never shown interest) showed up at the meeting in São Sebastião for the first time!   So many good things came out of the afternoon under a Jaca tree.

Manoel #2 and The Three Gals

As previously mentioned, we wanted you to meet some of the precious students we leave behind.  We’ve talked about Carlos and Simone.  Let’s continue with Manoel #2 (our pioneer partner Manoel, who we met first, is Manoel#1).

Six months ago during our very first week here, we worked in a village called Capim Branco.  As is the custom, we pilled into Manoel#1’s car and headed there, it’s about a 25 minute drive.  Once we arrive in a rural area we must find a spot, somewhat in the middle of the territory and park under a shade tree.  The only shade tree we could find was a giant mango tree right in someone’s side yard.  We were a bit horrified when Manoel pulled in but we went with it.  Sure enough, two sweet teenage girls came out of the house and told us it was no problem to park there.  When we returned at lunchtime, the girls, their mom and their grandmother were waiting with bowls of water and towels and had set out chairs for us!  At the end of the day, we thanked them again and left the recent magazines after giving a witness.

Three months later, we finally got around to returning to those who had shown interest that day!  Only we didn’t get very far.  Once we arrived, we again parked under the same mango tree.  But this time the man of the house came out to greet us on crutches.  Ben began to explain who we were and how we had parked there before and the man cut him off saying, “I know who you are!  I’ve been waiting three months for you guys to come back!  In fact just last night I was saying to my wife how sad I was that I missed those Jehovah’s Witness that day.  I need to learn more about the Bible.”  He explained that he’s always working but that we caught him home because he had just suffered a motorcycle accident and that he’d be home now for three months – just the time we had left there :)

We sat down right away and started studying in what has become an essential element to our preaching work:  the brochure “Listen to God and Live Forever”.  He loves what he’s learning, has never missed a week and now his wife and daughters regularly listen in.  He’s been incredibly encouraged by his fleshly brother who as it turns out is studying in another state.  They call each other frequently and share what they’re learning.  Manoel#2 and his wife attended Ben’s last talk and will continue studying with Manoel#1 and Menice.

Ben has Manoel read from the brochure.  Ben then reads the bible texts and asks Manoel to explain how he thinks they apply.

Ben with Manoel and his wife at their lovely home

The Three Gals started as just one, the oldest one, Lia.  Doing territory in town we met Senhora Lia and she immediately invited us in.  She told us how at one point she had 11 children and now she has just 2 who are living.  She explained how her husband had died as well and how through all of this, many people told her that it was because of things she had done wrong in her life to deserve these loses.  We were able to show her from the scriptures that this reasoning was not sound.  She found comfort in that and welcomed us back.

Upon returning, we met her daughter Solange.  Solange explained to us that she had recently become dissatisfied with the Catholic faith and decided to leave.  She’d gone from there to the Assembly of God.  She said at that church there were still many things she didn’t agree with and that she was still searching for truth.  She had a number of questions that she’d always wanted to ask the Witnesses and so we did our best to answer them using the scriptures, along with the reasoning book.  At the end of our visit, we placed the Bible Teach book with her and set up to return.

Early on with Solange and Lia

We had three nice studies with Solange and Senhora Lia listening in.  On the fourth study, Solange’s niece Cassia was there and listened in as well.  Toward the end of the study as she got more comfortable, she was answering the questions before Solange could!  Cassia then sat in on every study after that and showed particular interest in the chapter on death as she had lost her father – Lia’s son - in a motorcycle accident a few years ago.

We studied twice a week with the three of them and both Lia and Solange made it to a meeting before we left.  At our last study Lia announced that she too was leaving the Catholic faith because literally translated, “I’m impassioned for Jehovah.”  :)

We set up for Manoel and Menice to continue their studies when we left but in between our leaving and their first study, about a week would go by.  During that time, Manoel and Menice had joined us at the beach for our last few days in Brazil.  Well one night the phone rang and it was The Three Gals.  They wanted us to know that they were sitting together and using the “Listen to God and Live Forever” brochure (we had given this to Lia as her reading is limited) reading the scriptures cited and taking turns answering the questions!  They said, “We don’t want to wait a whole week for our next study so we’re doing it ourselves!”

Lia

What a blessing it was to take part in ‘planting’ and ‘watering’ while we were there.  We miss our students terribly but we’re confident that Jehovah will ‘keep making it grow’ and that we’ll see them again some day.

OJ and the Amazon!

Three weeks ago We received with open arms our FIRST and ONLY guests from the United States.  Presenting...

Orlando and Jessica Martinez! (OJ)

For those of you who don't know this fantastic duo, they live in Arlington, MA and are part of the Boston Portuguese congregation.  Orlando is serving as an elder there and they are both pioneering together as of this year!  When we lived on Martha's Vineyard, Orlando lived in Arlington but would travel to the island on the weekends to support the Portuguese group.  In time he met Jessica who is from MV but was living on the Cape and supporting the Hyannis Portuguese congregation.  Happily as time went on our lives got all intertwined and a  friendship blossomed :)  Then before we knew it, they were here with us in Brazil!

After a day of post-traveling-recovery and a quick trip to the beach, we got busy in the work.  Orlando and Ben were able to do several shepherding calls to encourage the friends who will be left here to care for the congregation.  Orlando gave a public talk, Jessica and I did a demonstration and a special local needs was prepared by Orlando.  The friends were so encouraged by their visit - of only one week mind you - that a few cried when they left!

Jess preaching to two little boys who approached our car.    Orlando, "the loving elder" they called him.

But of all the good and kind things they did and accomplished, nothing tops what they did for Ben and me:

They made Gin and Tonics possible!! Thanks for the Gin guys.

Well before they left us for a week to go see other friends in other parts of Brazil, we all headed to get our yellow fever vaccinations...

...because a week later we met them in the Amazon!!  We had an incredible few days touring and swimming in the Rio Negro.  Here's a few pics from our trip:

Anavilhanas Lodge.  A series of pretty, quaint cabins built into the river's coastline.  All-inclusive, complete with two personal guides and an hour by hour itinerary.  I called the it "adult camp".

Raise your hand if you knew there were Pink Fresh Water Dolphins:

These guys were ridiculously cute and SOFT.  I totally lost it.  I got so excited over them my voice took on an unusually high pitch and twice I almost cried.  It was embarrassing for all of us.  Moving on..

It's the rainy season in the Amazon.  The water levels were up 24ft!  This photo is the top of a tree.

An ant-house.                      An anaconda look-alike.            Our canoes.

A vine climb.

We also saw a small poisonous snake, a massive and hairy tarantula, a sloth, baby alligators and ate a large grub that tasted like coconut.  You think we got pics of ANY of that?  Nope.  However...

5:30am sunrise on the Rio Negro was captured.

Happy tourists :)

Cock-a-doodle-do

Without officially poling need-greaters and missionaries, we have created a top ten list.  Over the years we have heard many experiences shared, now we've had our own and it seems that all such adventures have these things in common:

1.  You will be hot.
2.  You will get sick.
3.  You will miss certain foods and beverages from home and nothing will fill this void.
4.  You will hate the difference in culture at first and embrace it at the end.
5.  You will cry tears of frustration at first and tears of joy at the end.
6.  You will make new lifelong friends.
7.  You will have incredible field experiences.
8.  You will draw closer to Jehovah and your mate or friend who went with you.
9.  Your perspective on the world and Jehovah's organization will change for the better, forever.

and 10....

You WILL get gifted a live chicken.

I remember my sister telling me this happened when she need-greated in Africa.  I laughed my head off and couldn't imagine a worse gift!  But that was then.

Yesterday we went to visit an inactive sister who lives out in the country and manages a chicken farm.  She fulfilled #10.  Except that this time, we couldn't imagine a better gift!  Here's a glimpse into our afternoon yesterday:

The chicks.                                                The feed.
The fear.

Maria is laughing at our reaction like, how on earth is this a big deal?  Silly Americans.  We just go pick out a chicken, put it in the box and call it a day.  Ok we got this..

She starts to lose us though when she asks, "You want a female or a male?"  Uhhhhhhhh.................

We just want a chicken in a box.  Closed please.

She was quickly packed away and in the car.  Field trip time little hen...

She was dropped off at a local chicken shop
And moved from a box to a bag

She now has a place in our fridge and very soon.... in our tummies :)  Thanks Maria!!

Meet Carlos. Meet Simone.

The longer we've been here, the better our Portuguese and understanding of the the culture has gotten.  With each day that passes we've been able to meet more of the locals and of course cover more territory.  These factors have led to a richer ministry than at the start and we're happy to announce that between the two of us we are currently conducting eleven studies weekly.  It's a blessing to have met our students and a sadness to to think about saying goodbye in a few weeks.  But before we do that, we want you to meet all of them too!  Let's start with Carlos and Simone...

Carlos is in his 50s and was left to Ben when our elder left, his former study conductor.  His brother is one of Jehovah's Witnesses in Bahia (a state about 5 hrs south of here) but no one in his immediate family supports him.  Carlos' wife and two grown sons all belong to Evangelical churches and give him a hard time.  They cling tightly to beliefs such as: God shows us his blessing by means of material riches and that we manifest we have the holy spirit by speaking in tongues and expelling demons, etc.  They also feel that God can be called "God", "Lord" "Jehovah" or "Jesus" it's all the same thing.  Every time we study with Carlos at his home, we are challenged on these points by his family members.  One of his sons has shown some interest, ascertained where we live and now regularly stops by to have conversations.  We've made some headway with him on a few points and he recently attended a meeting with his dad!  He said afterwards, "I agree with 95% of your teachings.  Many things I agree with more than at my own church."

Carlos lives deep in the rurals and doesn't have a car so getting into town for all the meetings is a challenge.  Every 14 days he leaves his village at noon and gets a bus into town.  His son mentioned above (Paulo) lives in town so he stops there for a bit then walks to the meeting.  After the meeting he spends the night at Paulo's house and on sunday gets a bus back home.  Carlos is witnessing at every opportunity and always comments at the meetings he attends.  He's well on his way to being a publisher :)

Ben and Carlos at his home

Of course no visit with Carlos is complete without some fresh coconut water from his backyard.

Three weeks ago we were working in a village not too far from Carlos'.  Ben and I knocked on a door and he did one of our standard presentations, "My name is Ben, this is my wife Meg, what's your name?"  A young woman replied, "Simone."  He continued, "Isn't it true that everyone has a name?  Have you ever met anyone without a name? (she giggles and says no) Even our pets have names!  But a question remains.  Do you think God has a name also?"  This presentation yields a WIDE variety of answers from God and Jesus to Michael, Joseph and once a woman even said Padre Cicero! - he's was a famous Catholic priest of which every Catholic around here has a statue.  On this particular day however, Simone replied, "Yes God has a name.  His name is Jehovah."

You can imagine our surprise!  It turns out just a few weeks prior, Simone moved here from Sao Paulo to live with her grandmother.  In Sao Paulo she lived with her mother who studied for several years when Simone was young and Simone would sit in on the studies!  She said that just a few days prior  she had visited the KH in Junqueiro (one of our neighboring congregations) asking for a study.  After saying where she lived, a sister there explained to her that she was in fact in Sao Sebastiao's territory and that the sister would work on arranging someone from our congregation to stop by.  A few days later we came knocking at her door.... coincidence?  We think not!  We've had two wonderful studies with her since.

Simone and me.  And Grandma.
